The passenger side landing jack on our Keystone Cougar fifth wheel suffered a major failure last week. I was in the process of jacking the trailer off the truck when I heard and felt a loud clunk. In fact, my wife who was inside setting things up immediately looked out the window and ask “What the heck was that?”. “Not sure” I replied, but I knew something was not right with the jacks.I decide to retract them again and that’s when I saw the passenger side landing leg was not lifting up!  Luckily I was still hooked to the truck so I set to work removing the faulty landing leg to try and determine the issue. Removing the trailers landing leg was pretty straight forward involving undoing just a few bolts, its foot pad and locking pin assembly. In no time I had the whole leg out.

Yes, you can repair landing gears on your fifth wheel with an inexpensive rebuild kit. No, in the interest of full disclosure, I did not do this…yet. But as promised in my last post about how to fix fifth wheel legs, I can provide step by step instructions. And I have plenty of photos. How? Because I tore apart my seized landing gear leg to see how it works. I identified how all the parts are put together. As a result, I figured out just how easy it is to repair landing gears. Volvo Trucks will now equip fifth wheel coupling devices from JOST International as standard equipment on Volvo VN and VHD tractors manufactured at its Dublin, Va. plant, which assembles all Volvo trucks sold in North America.

JOST has been manufacturing fifth wheel coupling devices globally since 1956 and began manufacturing for the North America market in their Greeneville, Tennessee facility in 2000. In total JOST has supplied more than three million fifth wheels to the global market and there now more than 100,000 on the road in North America.
